Textile-based mixed media relief
A tactile, layered piece inspired by the small, complex worlds found within moss and lichen landscapes.
Constructed using natural and reclaimed materials, including waste wool and fibres, this work builds a rich, textured surface that shifts with light and perspective. Stitch and material are used to create depth and quiet movement, drawing the eye across the piece rather than towards a single focal point.
Designed as a versatile, sculptural object, Mossy Microcosm II can sit as a centrepiece on a coffee table, dining table, console, or plinth. It is set into an elm wood round sourced from Logie Steading, with a leather inset from a local supplier. A hidden, integrated wooden base allows the piece to turn, offering changing viewpoints and interaction. This base can be easily removed so the work sits flush or can be wall mounted.
The piece is intentionally tactile and robust, inviting touch while remaining easy to care for.
Every material, stitch, and bead can be traced back to its origin, with a near non-existent carbon footprint. Rooted in both process and place, the work reflects a quiet commitment to using what already exists, rather than extracting more.
Part of an ongoing body of work made through slow, deliberate stitching and material-led process. Each piece is produced over time and is entirely one of a kind.
